Give Back With Youthsafe’s Charity Clothes Bin Program

At Youthsafe, one of our driving forces is to build our effectiveness and capacity to help young people while also contributing to the circular economy in a way that benefits the environment and the charity shop marketplace. Our charitable clothing recycling program helps us achieve all these objectives through the support of the communities we serve.

About Our Industry Partner—King Cotton

We are proud to be a charity partner of King Cotton. Our partnership has given us the support we need to continue our work and make sure that our clothing bins are helping Australians choose a sustainable path to clothing and textile disposal.

Operating since 1980, King Cotton has provided Australian communities with sustainable solutions that are both cost-effective and socially aware when it comes to household goods and clothing disposal.

Their aim is to offer mutually beneficial collection programs to shopping centres, commercial properties with good public exposure and local councils with the target of minimising illegal dumping, reducing landfills, and improving the employment rates of low-skilled workers.

Property owners can clearly demonstrate they are about these great outcomes by placing one or so of our bins on their land.

Why Charity Clothing Bins And Donations Are Important

Each year, approximately 501 million kilograms of clothing and textiles are thrown away in Australia. With every Australian disposing of an average of 23 kilograms of clothing in landfills, it’s a growing problem for which Australia has yet to find a sustainable and systematic solution.

Donating clothes is something that everyone can take part in—young and old. It’s an important activity young people can engage in to understand the problem and spread awareness about the impact of clothing that ends up in landfills.

At Youthsafe, our clothes donation bins are our primary fundraising endeavour. We have placed bins across numerous locations in Sydney in the hopes that our efforts will invite more donations of clean and usable clothes for resale and reuse, both here in Australia and in overseas markets.

Why Youthsafe Is Proud To Be Part Of Australia’s Charitable Recycling Sector

We believe that everyone can share the responsibility of reducing carbon emissions through acts such as cycling to work, recycling paper and glass, and buying reusable plastic products. Donating clothing for reuse is also a great way to reduce our carbon footprint—10% of global greenhouse emissions can be attributed to the fashion industry.

That’s why, at Youthsafe, we have joined the fight against this growing problem with our charitable clothing recycling program.

For these reasons, we have become advocates for clothes donation bins.

The charitable reuse of clothing items generates $527 million in revenue towards social welfare programs

Charities use 86% of all clothing donations, (310,000 tonnes annually) with just 14% going to landfills

Charitable reuse reduces C02 emissions by 66% (880,000 tonnes) and reduces water usage by 57% (59,000 ml)

Would-be waste collected gets sold through charity shops, generating almost $1 billion a year for the economy

A Notable Recognition For Youthsafe

The former Federal Member for Bennelong (the Hon. John Alexander), championed Youthsafe’s campaign to be approved as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) charity. The 24-year-long campaign was finally achieved when the 2020 Federal Budget announced that Youthsafe, along with only seven other charities nationally, was granted DGR by an amendment to Tax Law.

Yes. If you own a private property and want to become a Youthsafe bin location, we’d love to hear from you. Send us an inquiry, and one of our team members will get back to you shortly.

Does Youthsafe have any industry partners?

Yes. We have partnered with King Cotton—a professional resource recovery company that handles the reuse and recycling of household clothing and textiles in Australia.

As one of their charity partners, Youthsafe has received donations from King Cotton that have helped support our work and continue our efforts in conducting charity clothing bins across Sydney.

At the moment, our charity clothing bins can be found in locations across Sydney.

Do you need to pay to use the charity clothing bins?

No. Donations can be made free of charge. Simply take your pre-loved clothes to one of the Youthsafe bin locations and drop them into the bin. We will make regular collections and will either use them for resale or reuse.

We do request that all clothing that’s donated are in good, clean, and wearable condition for the next person.
