Supporting Young People to Get a Licence

Injuries due to transport related crashes were highest for young people aged 15 to 24 in the lowest socio-economic group (AIHW 2019)

Subject to partnership arrangements and funding availability, Youthsafe supports eligible young
people to progress getting their driver licence while also developing their behaviour as safer drivers.

Getting a full driver licence over the minimum four years of the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) requires access to a road worthy
vehicle, supportive adults and significant financial outlay which are not available to all young people.

Lack of a licence impacts young people’s access to employment, education, training, health care, family,
community support and cultural activities; which limits their opportunities and life chances.

Youthsafe helps groups of young people who lack the resources to meet the requirements of the GLS.

Eligible young people may come from a range of backgrounds including those who:

  • identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • belong to a refugee and resettlement community
  • come from communities who have limited access to transport options or who are geographically disadvantaged
  • are vulnerable or at risk of dropping out of school or
  • experience social and economic hardship.

Helping at risk youth, whatever the cause, is our objective.

A typical Supporting Young People to get a Licence program is delivered as a project with a set number of young people. The number of young people and the service mix is determined by the level of investment we are able to attract as a road safety charity prior to the commencement of the project.

Ideally, a Supporting Young People to get a Licence project would provide access to:

  • group driver safety training and one-on-one mentoring sessions
  • professional driving instruction and some financial reimbursements for licensing costs
  • Keys2drive and the Safer Drivers Course
  • Youthsafe’s young driver safety resources.
